Commercial Banks in Germany industry analysis

The development of credit banks in Germany over the last five years has been influenced by several factors, including the low-interest phase, the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Industry turnover, which is made up of the interest and commission income of credit banks, has risen by an average of 0.5% per year since 2018. There are two main reasons for the increase over the last five years: Banks were barely generating any income because the European Central Bank's (ECB) key interest rate was at 0% for a long time before it was raised due to the inflation target. Added to this was the trend towards digital banking. The great popularity of direct banks and the online processing of all banking transactions forced credit banks to invest in the digital banking segment as well, which is associated with high hurdles and can therefore weigh on profits. For 2024, IBISWorld expects a final reversal of the negative sales trend due to a higher base rate level, which will improve interest income. Industry turnover is expected to increase by 0.6% year-on-year to €96.9 billion.Banks offered loans on favourable terms due to the low interest rates that prevailed for a long time. This increased the demand for loans and the lending volume in the sector rose. In addition, digitalisation has prompted banks to rethink their business concepts, which has led to numerous branch closures over the last five years. This has led to job cuts and savings. IBISWorld expects this trend to continue in the coming years and that more banks will rely on the use of modern technologies to process business transactions. For the period from 2024 to 2029, IBISWorld forecasts average annual sales growth of 0.5% to 99.3 billion euros. The key interest rate hike will ease the pressure on banks in the short term. However, the economy is performing worse than in previous years due to the war in Ukraine and demand from key export markets is falling. The hoped-for economic recovery is therefore likely to be delayed. The International Monetary Fund anticipates a further slowdown in global economic growth in the current year, which is likely to hit Germany hard in a global comparison. As a result, there is also a risk that corporate customers, who are important for the sector, will demand fewer loans.

Trends and Insights

  • Many industry players are currently reducing their workforce. Commerzbank, for example, wants to cut almost 10,000 full-time jobs by 2024 and Deutsche Bank has cut around 18,000 jobs worldwide by the end of 2022.
  • The most important product category for credit banks is home loans for private households. The increase in interest rates will make construction more expensive, which is likely to reduce demand for such loans in the future.
  • Most of the credit banks' branches are located in the centre region. The two largest credit banks, Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank, are also headquartered in Frankfurt am Main.
  • There is very strong competition in the industry. The products of the credit banks are very homogeneous, which is why customer loyalty must be strengthened through outstanding services.
